Northampton Boot and Shoe Museum reopens after refurbishment
Northampton's world famous shoe museum reopens after £310,000 refurbishment. The floors were raised on the ground floor of the building to modernise it and give better access. The museum houses the world’s largest collection of shoes with more than 12,000 pairs. The museum also has displays of old shoe making machinery which shows how the process evolved over the past 100 years. The Life & Sole gallery shows the history of shoemaking and recreates a Northampton shoe factory. There is also a gallery showing how fashions in shoes have changed over a hundred years. Examples include designs by Salvatore Ferragomo, Manolo Blahnik and Vivienne Westwood.
